ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a fertility procedure where a single sperm is directly injected into a mature egg using a fine needle under a microscope. It is performed as part of IVF and is the primary treatment for male factor infertility, including low sperm count, poor motility, and abnormal morphology.
In standard IVF, sperm must penetrate the egg independently. In IVF ICSI treatment, a single sperm is injected directly into each egg by an embryologist. ICSI is recommended when sperm quality is poor, fertilisation rates were low in a previous IVF cycle, or surgically retrieved sperm is used.
ICSI fertility treatment is recommended for men with low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal morphology, zero sperm (azoospermia with TESA/PESA), high DNA fragmentation, or previous poor IVF fertilisation. It is also the standard method when PGT/PGD genetic testing is required.
The ICSI procedure is performed in the lab, you feel nothing during it. Egg retrieval is done under sedation. Embryo transfer is painless, similar to a routine gynaecological exam. Mild cramping for 1–2 days after retrieval is normal.
ICSI achieves fertilisation of 70–85% of injected eggs in experienced labs. Yes, ICSI is specifically designed for surgically retrieved sperm. For men with azoospermia, our team performs TESA or PESA on the same day as egg retrieval. Even a very small number of retrieved sperm is enough for successful ICSI fertilisation.
The ICSI microinjection itself takes 1–2 hours in the laboratory. The complete ICSI treatment cycle, stimulation to pregnancy blood test, takes approximately 4–6 weeks.
An ICSI pregnancy is confirmed by a beta-hCG blood test 14 days after embryo transfer. An ultrasound at 6–7 weeks confirms the heartbeat. An ICSI pregnancy develops in exactly the same way as a naturally conceived pregnancy.
There is no fixed number. More mature eggs retrieved means more embryos to choose from. We personalise your stimulation protocol to your ovarian reserve, not a standard dose. Surplus embryos are vitrified (frozen) for future use.
