IVF for PCOD in Lucknow

Women with PCOD often respond very well to IVF — but the treatment has to be handled differently. PCOD ovaries produce a large number of eggs, which is an advantage for IVF and also the reason stimulation must be gentler and monitored closely. At Javitri Hospital, IVF and PCOD are managed with protocols designed for exactly this, at a NABH-certified lab with the first Embryoscope in Uttar Pradesh.

PCOD and IVF — What You Should Know First

PCOD, or polycystic ovarian disease, is the term most commonly used in India for the same condition doctors also call PCOS. In PCOD the ovaries hold many small follicles and hormone balance is disturbed, so eggs mature but are not released regularly. Since ovulation is the problem rather than egg quality, women with PCOD usually have a good number of eggs available — and that matters a great deal when it comes to IVF.

It is worth saying plainly: most women with PCOD do not need IVF. Ovulation-inducing tablets, injections or IUI help the majority conceive, and those simpler steps come first. You can read the full stepwise pathway on our PCOS infertility treatment page. IVF becomes the right choice when those treatments have not worked over several cycles, when tubes are blocked or sperm quality is poor, or when age means there is less time to spend on step-by-step attempts.

When IVF Is Advised for PCOD

IVF is a considered decision, not a default. These are the situations where we would discuss it with you.

How IVF Is Adjusted for PCOD

A standard IVF protocol is not the right protocol for PCOD ovaries. These are the adjustments that make IVF and PCOD a safe combination.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation — The Honest Picture

The one real risk that sets IVF with PCOD apart is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, or OHSS. Because PCOD ovaries respond so readily to fertility medication, they can over-respond — producing too many follicles, causing swelling, abdominal discomfort and, in severe cases, fluid retention that needs hospital treatment.

This risk is why the adjustments above exist. A low starting dose, an antagonist protocol, frequent scans, an agonist trigger and a freeze-all approach are all specifically aimed at preventing OHSS, and together they make it far less likely than it once was. Your specialist will explain your individual risk at the start, and you are monitored throughout the cycle rather than left to notice symptoms yourself. Being a complete hospital matters here too — if you ever need observation or treatment, it happens on the same campus, not at another facility.

HOW WE REDUCE OHSS RISK
Starting doseKept deliberately low
Protocol choiceAntagonist
MonitoringFrequent scans & hormones
TriggerAgonist where suitable

Preparing for an IVF Cycle with PCOD

What you do in the months before an IVF cycle genuinely affects how it goes. For PCOD, preparation is aimed at improving how the ovaries respond and lowering the risk of complications.

  • Work towards a healthier weight where advised, since it improves response and outcomes
  • Follow the diet plan your dietitian sets, focusing on whole grains and protein over refined carbohydrates
  • Take metformin if it has been prescribed for insulin resistance
  • Keep up regular activity, thyroid treatment and vitamin D correction if needed
  • Complete all baseline tests so your protocol can be planned accurately

After the Transfer — Pregnancy with PCOD

Conceiving is the goal, but PCOD continues to matter afterwards. Women with PCOD have a somewhat higher chance of gestational diabetes and raised blood pressure in pregnancy, so monitoring does not stop once your test is positive.

At Javitri, the same institution that carries out your IVF also looks after your pregnancy. That means early sugar screening, blood pressure checks, growth scans by our fetal medicine team, and a 30-bed NICU on the same premises if your baby arrives early. IVF and PCOD — FAQs

Women with PCOD generally respond well to IVF, largely because their ovaries produce a good number of eggs, which gives embryologists more to work with. Outcomes still depend on your age, weight, sperm quality and overall health, so your specialist will give you an honest, individual picture at your consultation rather than a general figure.

In everyday use in India, PCOD and PCOS refer to the same condition. Doctors more often use PCOS, short for polycystic ovary syndrome, as the formal medical term. Whichever name is used, the fertility problem and its treatment are the same.

Most women with PCOD do not. Lifestyle change, ovulation-inducing tablets, injections and IUI help the majority conceive, and those come first. IVF is advised when these have not worked over several cycles, when tubes are blocked or sperm quality is poor, or when age makes moving faster the sensible choice.

PCOD ovaries contain a larger number of small follicles and are unusually sensitive to fertility medication, so many follicles grow at once during stimulation. This is an advantage for IVF, but it is also why the dose is kept low and the cycle is monitored closely.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is an over-response of the ovaries to fertility medication, causing swelling and abdominal discomfort, and in severe cases needing hospital care. In PCOD it is prevented by using a low starting dose, an antagonist protocol, frequent monitoring, an agonist trigger where suitable, and freezing embryos for transfer in a later cycle.

In PCOD cycles the ovaries are often still very active at the end of stimulation. Transferring then, and adding pregnancy hormones, can worsen an over-response. Freezing the embryos and transferring one in a later, settled cycle is safer and is now a common approach for PCOD patients.

Yes. For women who are overweight, reducing weight before an IVF cycle tends to improve how the ovaries respond and lowers the risk of complications in treatment and pregnancy. Our dietitians build a realistic plan around everyday Indian meals as part of your preparation.

IVF starts from Rs 95,000 and IUI from Rs 20,000. The final figure depends on your protocol, medication requirement and any add-ons such as ICSI, blastocyst culture or embryo freezing. You receive a written, itemised estimate before treatment begins, with no hidden charges, and 0% EMI is available.
