What Is Care of Twin Pregnancy?

You may wonder what makes the care of twin pregnancy different from a single-baby pregnancy. When you are carrying twins, your body makes more blood, and your babies need more space and nutrition to grow. That is why a twin pregnancy is watched more closely at every stage.

At Javitri, care during twin pregnancy is coordinated between our fetal medicine, high-risk obstetric and neonatal teams, so the same hospital that monitors your pregnancy also delivers your babies and, if needed, cares for them in the NICU. In practice, that means more frequent ultrasound scans, a personalised diet plan, regular checks of your blood pressure and sugar, and expert help with the tiredness and back pain that twins often bring. Why a Twin Pregnancy Needs Special Care

Understanding Your Twin Types (Chorionicity)

The first and most important ultrasound happens between 11 and 14 weeks. It tells us whether your babies share a placenta — which decides how often you are scanned and how your delivery is planned.

Your Monitoring Schedule and Checkups

For good care of twin pregnancy, you will visit the hospital more often than mothers expecting a single baby. From your first visit you have a clear plan and one team that knows your history.

  • Dating and chorionicity scan at 11–14 weeks
  • Cervical length check from around 20 weeks to watch for early labour
  • Growth scans every two to four weeks by twin type
  • Heartbeat and blood-flow checks for both babies
  • Screening for pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and anaemia
  • A delivery plan agreed well before your due date

IVF Twin Pregnancy Care

Many couples receive the happy news of twins after fertility treatment. If you conceived through IVF, your early months matter, and our IVF twin pregnancy care gives you closer monitoring and support through the first trimester, with both babies watched carefully from the earliest weeks.

Because Javitri is a complete hospital, the fertility and pregnancy teams work together — the team that supported your IVF also monitors your twin pregnancy, delivers your babies and, if they arrive early, cares for them in our 30-bed NICU. If you are still planning treatment, your specialist will also explain that modern IVF often favours transferring a single embryo, because a twin pregnancy carries higher risks than a single one. You can read more on our IVF treatment page.

Diet and Nutrition for Two Babies

Good nutrition is one of the most important parts of care during twin pregnancy — you are eating to help two babies gain healthy weight. Your dietitian will personalise your plan, and these general steps help most mothers expecting twins.

  • Eat more protein-rich foods such as dals, paneer, eggs and milk
  • Take your iron and calcium as advised, to help avoid weakness
  • Drink plenty of water to support the fluid around both babies
  • Add extra calories each day, around 500, as your dietitian advises

Rest and Daily Life

Staying gently active helps, but rest is a major part of twins baby pregnancy care. Small adjustments protect you and both babies through the later months.

  • Avoid lifting heavy buckets or bags
  • Take short walks, but avoid standing for long periods
  • Sleep on your left side to support blood flow to the babies
  • If bed rest is advised late in pregnancy, it is to help prevent early labour

Planning the Delivery of Your Twins

Twins usually do not wait for the full nine months — most are ready to arrive between 36 and 37 weeks, and twins who share a placenta a little earlier. Your doctor will discuss the safest option with you well in advance. A vaginal birth is possible when the first baby is head-down, while a planned caesarean is often the safer choice for twins, and our operation theatres are ready around the clock.

Whatever your plan, painless delivery is available, and our team is prepared for a caesarean if it becomes the safer option for you and your babies.

NICU Support for Newborn Twins

Because twins are often born a little early, they may be smaller at birth. Care does not stop at delivery: our NICU, staffed by neonatologists around the clock, uses incubators and continuous monitoring so premature or small twins receive expert care from the moment they are born. Twin Pregnancy Care — FAQs

A twin pregnancy is classed as higher-risk than a single pregnancy because of a greater chance of preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and uneven growth between the babies. Most twin pregnancies still go well, and structured monitoring by a fetal medicine specialist is what keeps both babies safe.

It depends on whether your twins share a placenta. Twins with separate placentas usually have growth scans about every four weeks from mid-pregnancy, while twins sharing a placenta are scanned roughly every two weeks from around 16 weeks. Your schedule is set after the chorionicity scan at 11 to 14 weeks.

Many mothers of twins can have a vaginal birth, particularly when the first baby is head-down and the pregnancy is otherwise uncomplicated. Others are safer with a planned caesarean. Your team agrees the plan with you in advance and is ready for either.

Twin pregnancies carry a higher chance of preterm birth, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, anaemia and uneven growth between the babies. Twins who share a placenta also have a small risk of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. These are the reasons a twin pregnancy is monitored more closely, so that any issue is picked up and managed early. Most twin pregnancies still go well with the right care.

Mothers expecting twins are usually advised to gain more weight than in a single pregnancy, but the right amount depends on your height, weight before pregnancy and general health. Rather than a fixed number, your doctor and dietitian will set a healthy target for you and check your progress at each visit, alongside the babies’ growth on scan.

IVF twins are monitored in the same structured way as any twin pregnancy — early chorionicity assessment, serial growth scans and screening for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. Because twins are more common after fertility treatment, modern IVF often favours transferring a single embryo to reduce risk.

Twins are generally delivered earlier than single babies — often around 36 to 37 weeks, and a little earlier when they share a placenta. The exact timing is individualised to your pregnancy and agreed before your due date.

Carrying twins raises your needs for energy, protein, iron, folic acid and calcium. Regular protein-rich meals, good hydration and the supplements your doctor advises all help. Your dietitian will give you a personalised plan, as needs vary from mother to mother.

Twins can occur both naturally and after fertility treatment. Natural twins are more likely with a family history of twins, older maternal age, or in certain ethnic groups. Twins are also more common after IVF, particularly when more than one embryo is transferred. Whichever way your twins were conceived, the monitoring during pregnancy is the same.

Many mothers of twins do need to slow down, especially in the later months, because carrying two babies is more tiring and puts more strain on the body. Complete bed rest is not routinely advised for everyone and is only recommended for specific medical reasons. Your doctor will guide you on how active to stay based on how your pregnancy is progressing.
