Embryo Freezing in Lucknow

Embryo freezing lets you keep healthy embryos safely in storage and use them when the time is right, whether that is a later cycle, a second child, or after medical treatment that could affect fertility. At Javitri Hospital, embryos are frozen by vitrification, the modern gold standard, in a NABH certified laboratory with electronic tracking, and stored under the safeguards the ART Act 2021 requires.

What Is Embryo Freezing?

Embryo freezing, known medically as embryo cryopreservation, is the storage of embryos at very low temperature so they can be used in a future cycle. Embryos are created in the usual IVF way, by fertilising eggs with sperm in the laboratory, and any good quality embryos not transferred straight away are frozen and kept safely until you are ready.

The freezing itself is done by vitrification, an ultra rapid cooling method that turns the fluid inside the embryo into a glass like state without forming the ice crystals that used to damage embryos with older slow freezing. Stored in liquid nitrogen at around minus 196 degrees, all biological activity stops, so the embryo does not age or deteriorate. Vitrification has largely replaced slow freezing everywhere because survival on thawing is much higher.

One honest point to hold onto from the start: freezing preserves the quality an embryo already has, it does not improve it. A good embryo frozen today thaws as a good embryo later, which is exactly why freezing at the right time is valuable. Read about our IVF programme and blastocyst transfer.

Who Embryo Freezing Is For

Embryo freezing is part of many IVF journeys and a planned choice for others. These are the common reasons it is recommended.

How Embryo Freezing Works

Embryo freezing follows the early stages of a normal IVF cycle, with the freezing step added in the laboratory once embryos have developed.

  • Pre treatment checks, including hormone tests, an ultrasound and semen analysis where needed
  • Ovarian stimulation for around ten to fourteen days, monitored by scan and blood test
  • Egg collection in a short day care procedure under sedation
  • Fertilisation in the laboratory, by conventional IVF or ICSI, with embryos grown under Embryoscope monitoring
  • Vitrification of the good quality embryos, using cryoprotectants and ultra rapid cooling
  • Storage in liquid nitrogen, with every sample tracked electronically by RI Witness

When you are ready to use them, the embryos are thawed and transferred in a frozen embryo transfer cycle, described below. The freezing itself adds only a laboratory step, nothing extra is done to your body at the point of freezing.

Using Your Frozen Embryos, the FET Cycle

Frozen embryos are used in a frozen embryo transfer, or FET. It is a gentler process than a fresh IVF cycle because there is no stimulation or egg collection, only preparation of the uterine lining and the transfer itself.

Your specialist chooses either a natural cycle, tracking your own ovulation, or a medicated cycle where hormones prepare the lining, based on how regular your cycles are. When the lining is ready, the embryo is thawed gently in the laboratory, and modern vitrification means most embryos survive thawing well. A thin catheter then places the thawed embryo into the uterus, and a pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.

An advantage of FET is timing. The transfer happens in a calm, prepared cycle rather than immediately after stimulation, when the hormonal environment is not always ideal, which is one reason a freeze all approach suits many patients. Read more about blastocyst transfer.

Is Embryo Freezing Safe?

Embryo freezing is a long established and well studied procedure, and the evidence on safety is reassuring.

  • Vitrification gives high embryo survival on thawing, far better than older slow freezing
  • Freezing does not age or damage the embryo while it is stored, since all biological activity stops
  • Healthy pregnancies have come from embryos stored for many years
  • Studies show babies born from frozen embryos are as healthy as those from fresh transfers
  • Every sample is tracked electronically to prevent any mix up

The one honest caveat is that freezing preserves but does not guarantee. A pregnancy still depends on embryo quality, the age at which the embryos were created, and the health of the uterus at transfer.

Storage, Consent and the Law

Embryo storage in India is governed by the Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2021, and a few clear points are worth understanding before you freeze.

Embryos are stored for the period set under the ART Act, with extension possible in defined circumstances, and storage continues on the basis of your written consent. Because embryos belong to both partners, consent for their storage and later use is given jointly, and it is worth discussing in advance what you would both wish to happen in situations such as a change of mind, separation, or if consent is later withdrawn. These are not comfortable conversations, but having them early prevents difficulty later, and our counsellors can help you think them through.

We explain the current storage period, the annual storage arrangement and the consent renewal process in plain language, so nothing about your embryos is ever unclear or left to assumption.

Embryo Freezing or Egg Freezing?

People often ask which to choose. The difference is simple. Embryo freezing stores a fertilised embryo, which needs sperm at the time of freezing, so it suits couples, or anyone using donor sperm, who are ready to create embryos now. Egg freezing stores unfertilised eggs, which suits a woman who wants to preserve her fertility without deciding on sperm yet.

For a couple planning treatment, embryo freezing is usually the natural choice, since embryos are being created in the cycle anyway. For a single woman preserving her options for the future, egg freezing keeps the decision open. Your specialist will talk through which fits your situation honestly, rather than steering you toward one by default. Read about donor programmes if donor sperm or eggs are part of your plan.

Care That Continues After Transfer

Because Javitri is a complete women’s hospital, the care around your frozen embryos does not stop at the laboratory. When you return to use them, the same institution prepares your cycle, carries out the transfer, and looks after the pregnancy that follows.

That means your frozen embryo transfer, your pregnancy monitoring, high risk care if needed, delivery and a 30 bed NICU are all under one roof, with the same team that froze your embryos seeing you through to your baby. There is no handover between separate centres at any stage. Read about our pregnancy care.

Embryo Freezing, FAQs

Embryo freezing, or embryo cryopreservation, is the storage of embryos at very low temperature for use in a future cycle. Embryos are created through IVF, and good quality embryos not transferred straight away are frozen by vitrification and stored in liquid nitrogen until you are ready to use them.

Vitrification is the modern method of freezing embryos using ultra rapid cooling, which turns the fluid inside the embryo into a glass like state without forming damaging ice crystals. It has largely replaced older slow freezing because far more embryos survive the thawing process.

Embryos can remain viable for many years, and healthy pregnancies have resulted from embryos stored for well over a decade. In India the storage period and consent renewal follow the ART Act 2021, with extension possible in defined circumstances. We explain the current period and the renewal process to you clearly before you freeze.

No. While frozen, all biological activity stops, so the embryo does not age or deteriorate. Vitrification gives high survival on thawing, and studies show that babies born from frozen embryos are as healthy as those from fresh transfers. Freezing preserves the embryo, it does not harm it.

For many patients, frozen embryo transfer gives results comparable to a fresh transfer, and sometimes better, because the transfer happens in a calm, prepared cycle rather than straight after stimulation. Your own chance still depends on embryo quality, the age at which the embryos were created, and the health of your uterus at transfer.

Embryo freezing stores a fertilised embryo and needs sperm at the time of freezing, so it suits couples or anyone using donor sperm who are ready to create embryos now. Egg freezing stores unfertilised eggs and suits a woman who wants to preserve her fertility without deciding on sperm yet. Your specialist will advise which fits your situation.

Because embryos belong to both partners, decisions about them are made jointly and recorded in your written consent. It is worth agreeing in advance what you would both wish in situations such as a change of plan, separation or withdrawal of consent. Our counsellors help you think these through, and the ART Act framework guides what is permitted.

No, and any claim otherwise is misleading. Freezing preserves the quality an embryo already has at the moment it is frozen. A good embryo thaws as a good embryo, which is exactly why freezing at the right time matters, but the process cannot make a weaker embryo stronger.

Yes, and it is one of the most valuable uses of freezing. For couples facing chemotherapy or radiotherapy that may affect fertility, creating and freezing embryos beforehand preserves the chance of a family afterwards. Timing matters, so it is best discussed with your specialist as early as possible before cancer treatment begins.

Embryo freezing is usually an add on to an IVF cycle, with a one time vitrification charge plus an annual storage fee, and a separate cost later for the frozen embryo transfer. You receive a written, itemised estimate before treatment begins, with no hidden charges, and 0% EMI options are available. Your first consultation is Rs 600 with Dr. Rajul Tyagi, or Rs 400 with Dr. Niharika Tyagi or Dr. Lavanya Tyagi.
