What Is a Normal Delivery?

A normal delivery, also called a normal vaginal delivery, is the birth of your baby through the birth canal, without a surgical operation. Your body goes through labour, the cervix gradually opens, and your baby is born with the guidance and support of your obstetric team. It is the way most healthy pregnancies are designed to end, and for mother and baby it is usually the gentlest start.

At Javitri, a normal delivery is planned around you. During your pregnancy we check that you and your baby are well and prepare you for labour, and on the day we support you to stay comfortable, mobile and in control, while watching closely over your safety. If at any point a normal delivery is no longer the safest option, a caesarean and a full newborn team are ready in the same building.

This continuity, from antenatal care through pregnancy care, delivery and the NICU, is what sets a complete women’s hospital apart from a standalone clinic.

Benefits of a Normal Delivery

When a pregnancy is healthy, a normal delivery brings real advantages for both mother and baby.

Steps of a Normal Delivery: The Three Stages of Labour

Labour unfolds in three stages. Knowing the steps of normal delivery helps you feel prepared and calm on the day. Your team guides you through each one.

  1. First stage, early labour. Mild, irregular contractions begin to soften and open the cervix. This phase can take hours, often at home, and you are encouraged to rest, eat lightly and stay hydrated.
  2. First stage, active labour. Contractions become stronger, longer and closer together, and the cervix opens to about 10 centimetres. This is when you come in to the labour suite for close monitoring and support.
  3. Second stage, pushing and birth. With the cervix fully open, you push with each contraction, and your baby is gently guided out and placed with you, and the cord is clamped and cut.
  4. Third stage, the placenta. Gentle contractions deliver the placenta, usually within about 5 to 30 minutes, and your team checks it is complete and that any bleeding is well controlled.
StageWhat happensTypical time
First (early)Cervix starts to open, mild contractionsHours, often at home
First (active)Cervix opens to about 10 cmSeveral hours
SecondPushing and the birth of your babyMinutes to a few hours
ThirdDelivery of the placentaAbout 5 to 30 minutes

Every labour is different, so these times are a general guide. A first baby often takes longer than later births, and your team keeps you updated throughout.

Signs of Labour and When to Come In

As your due date nears, it helps to know the signs that labour is starting, so you know when to rest at home and when to come to the hospital. Keep your hospital bag and pregnancy records ready from about week 37.

  • Regular contractions that grow stronger, longer and closer together
  • A low backache or a feeling of pressure in the pelvis
  • A pink or blood-tinged discharge, known as the show
  • Your waters breaking, as a sudden gush or a slow trickle

Come in when contractions are about a minute long and five minutes apart for an hour, or as soon as your waters break. Come in straight away, at any hour, if you have bleeding, a severe headache, reduced baby movements, or your waters look green or brown.

Comfort and Pain Relief in Labour

Labour is hard work, but there is a great deal that helps you stay comfortable and in control. Moving freely, changing position, breathing techniques, warmth and the steady support of your team all make a real difference, and you are encouraged to do what feels right for you.

If you would like stronger pain relief, an epidural is available for a painless delivery, so you can rest and stay alert through labour. You can decide as things progress, there is no pressure either way, and your team talks you through the choices at each step.

Safety-first Monitoring

A normal delivery is safest when it is watched over carefully. Throughout labour we monitor your baby’s heartbeat and your own progress, so we can act early if anything needs attention. Most labours go smoothly, and this close watch is simply there to keep it that way.

If labour does not progress, or your baby shows signs of distress, your obstetrician may advise an assisted birth or a caesarean. Because we also provide high-risk pregnancy care and a 30-bed NICU, you and your baby are never far from help, whatever the day brings.

Normal Delivery: Frequently Asked Questions

A normal delivery, also called a normal vaginal delivery, is the natural birth of your baby through the birth canal, without a surgical operation. The body goes through labour, the cervix opens, and the baby is born with the support of your obstetric team. For a healthy pregnancy, a normal delivery is usually the safest and most comfortable way to give birth, with a faster recovery for most mothers.

For the mother, a normal delivery usually means a faster recovery, a shorter hospital stay, less pain afterwards, and a lower risk of infection and surgical complications. For the baby, a normal delivery supports immediate skin-to-skin contact, an easier start to breastfeeding, and a lower chance of breathing problems. A baby born by normal delivery also meets helpful bacteria that support the gut and immune system.

There are three stages of labour. The first stage is when contractions open the cervix from closed to about 10 centimetres, and it has an early phase at home and an active phase in hospital. The second stage is pushing and the birth of your baby. The third stage is the delivery of the placenta, usually within about 5 to 30 minutes of birth. Your team guides and monitors you through each step.

Most women with a healthy pregnancy can plan for a normal delivery. It depends on your health, the baby’s position and growth, and how the pregnancy is progressing. Even after one earlier caesarean, a normal delivery is sometimes possible and is discussed carefully for safety. Your obstetrician reviews everything with you and recommends the safest plan for you and your baby.

The common signs are regular contractions that grow stronger, longer and closer together, a low backache or pressure, a pink or blood-tinged discharge called the show, and your waters breaking as a gush or a slow trickle. Early labour can take a while, especially with a first baby, so you can often stay comfortable at home until contractions settle into a steady pattern.

Come in when your contractions are strong and regular, about a minute long and roughly five minutes apart for an hour, or when your waters break, or if you cannot talk through a contraction. Come in straight away, at any time, if you have bleeding, a bad headache, reduced baby movements, or your waters are green or brown. When in doubt, call us, our labour suite is open 24 hours.

Labour is hard work and does bring pain, but there is a lot that helps. Breathing, movement, position changes, warmth and the support of your team all make a real difference. We also offer an epidural for a painless delivery if you want it, so you stay comfortable and alert. You can decide as labour progresses, and your team guides you through the options.

There is no fixed time, because every labour is different. For a first baby, active labour and birth often take several hours, and it is usually quicker in later pregnancies. The third stage, delivering the placenta, is short, usually within about 5 to 30 minutes. Your team keeps you updated on your progress and stays with you throughout.

Your safety and your baby’s safety always come first. We monitor the baby’s heartbeat and your progress throughout labour. If labour does not progress, or the baby shows signs of distress, or another concern arises, your obstetrician may advise assisted birth or a caesarean. Because we are a complete hospital with a 24-hour theatre and a 30-bed NICU, help is always close at hand.

The first consultation is Rs 600 with Dr. Rajul Tyagi, or Rs 400 with Dr. Niharika Tyagi or Dr. Lavanya Tyagi. If an ultrasound is advised on the day it is Rs 800. Bring your pregnancy records, scan and blood reports, and a list of any medicines. Your doctor explains your antenatal plan and gives a written estimate for your delivery package before you decide.
